AMSA UCR x Flying Samaritans: Mock Clinic Workshop Recap

Writer: AMSA UCRAMSA UCR

Updated: Feb 26

On February 12, 2025, AMSA UCR partnered with Flying Samaritans to host an interactive Mock Clinic Workshop, providing members with hands-on experience in essential clinical skills. The workshop focused on two critical procedures: manual blood pressure measurement and electrocardiogram (ECG) basics, both fundamental to patient assessment in healthcare settings. Participants practiced taking manual blood pressure using a sphygmomanometer and stethoscope, learning proper cuff placement, how to identify systolic and diastolic pressures, and techniques to ensure accuracy. Unlike automated blood pressure machines, this method requires precision and attention to detail, making it a crucial skill for future healthcare professionals. The workshop also introduced the basics of ECG interpretation, where attendees learned to properly place leads and recognize key components of an ECG reading, such as P waves, QRS complexes, and T waves. Understanding these waveforms is essential in assessing heart function and identifying potential abnormalities. This hands-on experience allowed members to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical application, fostering confidence in performing basic patient care procedures. By collaborating with Flying Samaritans, AMSA UCR continues to provide students with meaningful opportunities to develop practical medical skills and prepare for future careers in healthcare.
